The Unbearable Sadness of Rooting

Back in March, when my brother and I whacked up the 17 pairs of partial-season tickets we had bought, we set aside most of the late-season games to attend together. Envisioning a pennant race and gripping, important baseball games, we thought it would be cool for both of us to be there when the most significant stuff was going down at the Park.

All of that was to have started tonight, but of course garbage time has already begun for the Phillies. My brother and I will be in Section 329, and we'll be cheering for the Phils to down the Braves, but I don't think our hearts will be completely in it. A Phillies win, after all, would cut their deficit to a jaw-dropping 10-1/2 games. We're going to games now for the baseball experience, not a playoff chase. (Well, okay, for the Schmitters and beer, too.)

As much as the blogosphere revels in its own snarky commentary -- believe me, I'm raising my hand -- I have to put aside sarcasm and pride in turning a clever phrase and admit to a very real sadness over this. I love writing, and I love writing about baseball and the Phillies, but it's tremendously disappointing to be spending so much time agonizing over a spectacular and all-encompassing failure. A successful season would have sooooo much more fun. After all, as Nuke LaLoosh once said, winning is, like, better than losing.

Did they really show those tools?! They sat a section over from us and we ridiculed them the whole time.

I'm a season ticket holder in Section 202. I wore a bag on my head and walked the concourse during the Saturday San Fran game. On the front, above the eye holes, I drew a P to resemble the current style worn. On the back I had "20 years, 3 winning seasons, 1 playoff appearance, sell the team". I was getting a lot of high fives from fans as well as ushers/other stadium employees.

My friend and I split a complete season and figured that we would sell a lot of the tickets to friends (for face value) and then go to the games that we wanted. This would allow us to hold the Sept tickets in anticipation of the pennant race. Also, more importantly we'd be guaranteed tickets to each playoff game. Well, after donating $3k to the coffers this year (although more than half the tickets were sold to other people) plus numerous beers, Schmitters, Pizzas of the Day, a lot of Dollar Dogs, etc I am looking forward to spending the next 2+ weeks on the west coast cruising around and staying as far away from Comcast Sportsnet, the Daily News/Inquirer, WIP and everything else. My only regret is missing the Eagles home opener, but I'll be back to go to the Monday night game.

Anyway, this season has been one HUGE disappointment. There isn't enough time or space to go into details, plus you all have seen it.

Why is Philadelphia so consumed with negative reinforcement? Bags on your heads? If you're so unhappy with the team, don't go to the games. Going to the games just to boo the home team for playing lousy is not really all that productive. You're not going to inspire the players to work harder to prove you wrong, you'll just encourage them to call their agent when they hit the locker room.

"As soon as you find out when the Expos are moving to D.C., call them and ask them if they need a center fielder."

This isn't crybaby talk. I just think it's lousy how our fans go to great lengths to make their home team look and feel even more pathetic than they already are.

To quote Bobby DeNiro in Cop Land: "You (the Phils) blew it!"

I always love when the local media says that Philly fans are the greatest in the country. On the contrary, they are rude, obnoxious, naysayers that make New Yawkers look civil. That being said, I think the Phils' fans should be cut some slack here. The Phillies gave up, plain and simple. Sure, they will claim injuries killed them, but good teams find a way to survive (Atlanta?). I don't care if they miss the playoffs if they give good effort. This team RARELY did that . . . and for that they SHOULD be booed.

Well this blog certainly is not about weight loss foods. What the heck! I guess the internet can play some tricks on us sometimes. I have been on-line for two hours
researching weight loss foods and came tumbling across your blog. I LOVE IT! I needed a break from weight loss foods anyways :-) If you don't mind I want to add your
blog to my favorites list so I can come back later on and read some more stuff. Well I guess I should get back to researching weight loss foods.
Even though my search is not on The Unbearable Sadness of Rooting I am glad I came across your blog. Keep blogging away!
